All of this week’s releases feature some great performances in some not so great movies… What’s new in the world of DVD for February 16th:
Black Mass (Check out our Movie Hot Take from last year)
Super Simple Synopsis: The movie about the real story that inspired The Departed.
You think Johnny Depp’s brilliance should be celebrated daily.
You love gangster movies. You love great performances even if the movie isn’t all that great.
You’ve seen every other Johnny Depp movie, so why not this one. You enjoyed The Departed.
You saw The Departed and didn’t get why everyone loved it so much because you thought it was overrated. You think Johnny Depp is overrated, too, come to think of it!
MHT Verdict: Buy it!
Johnny Depp is that good. The movie drags a little but it is one worth being in the collection.
Steve Jobs (Check out our Movie Hot Take from last year)
Super Simple Synopsis: Aaron Sorkin decided a fictionalized Steve Jobs would be more interesting.
You’ve watched every Apple event launch. You own everything that has an “i” in front of it. You love everything Aaron Sorkin does even though he essentially creates fiction out of reality.
You really need to get the bad taste out of your mouth left by seeing Ashton Kutcher’s portrayal of Jobs.
You saw Jobs and want to compare the two.
You’ve never purchased an Apple product because Android is better and think Sorkin is full of crap.
MHT Verdict: Stream it!
In the end, Steve Jobs felt like a total waste of time but it’s easy to see the attraction if you can get past Sorkin’s methods. Taking liberties with such an iconic figure doesn’t really make sense especially when you tell the fiction within reality. The events portrayed actually happened… just not the way Sorkin scripted them. That’s hard to get behind.
The 33 (Check out our Movie Hot Take from last year)
Super Simple Synopsis: 33 men trapped in a well for a long, long time.
You never miss anything Antonio Banderas does… you even liked Original Sin.
You remember the story of the 33 men trapped in a well in Chile in 2010 and always wanted to know more.
You’re having a lazy, rainy day and want to watch something but might want to nap a little during the movie and not feel like you missed anything.
You don’t have insomnia so long, drawn out boring films instantly put you to sleep.
MHT Verdict: Skip it!
Touching, heroic… and boring!
Trumbo (Check out our Movie Hot Take from last year)
Super Simple Synopsis: Trumbo was a Communist. Hollywood and the U.S. didn’t take kindly to Communists.
Your heart has grown fonder for Bryan Cranston since Breaking Bad has gone off the air.
You’re a sucker for a great supporting cast.
You like witty movies and you’re folding laundry so you won’t mind the movie’s dead spots.
You believe in ‘merica, damn it! You don’t want to see anything about some Commie scum!
MHT Verdict: Rent it!
The acting (especially the supporting cast featuring Louis C.K. and John Goodman) is great even if the script won’t blow you away.
