The Final 25 Movies of the First 100 Movies of 2018, Graded

2018-09-25
By: Brian Joseph
On: September 25, 2018
In: 2018, Lists, Ranked

Still a little backlogged on reviews, MHT tallied movie #100 about a week ago which continues to match 2017’s pace despite all the Movie Pass hiccups and other things that managed to get in the way of sitting in a dark theater for about 2 hours. While Sorry to Bother You remains in the top spot, 9 movies led by Juliet, Naked, jumped into the top 20 for the year. With almost half of the top 20 being seen in the last 2 months, it’s safe to say summer closed out with a bang in 2018. Here’s the rest of 2018’s grades if you haven’t been keeping up:

  • The First 25 Movies of 2018, Graded (April 7, 2018)
  • The Next 25 Movies of 2018, Graded (June 3, 2018)
  • The Next Next 25 Movies of 2018, Graded (July 22, 2018)

Now that you’re up to speed, here’s the last 25 movies of the first 100 movies of 2018, graded:Read More →

A Star Is Born and 19 Other Films To Look Forward To Before 2018 Is Through

2018-08-31

On: August 31, 2018
In: 2018, Lists

Currently, the MHT Top of 2018 list is 92 films deep and should see at least 50 movies added to it before we turn the page to 2019. (Which usually happens in mid-January because (a) January movies typically suck and (b) some “2018” films don’t get a wide release until January.) As typical, the Labor Day weekend is one of the weakest release weeks of the year with the widest release belonging to something called Kin about a kid who finds a space gun. Considering last year the widest release was Tulip Fever ($1.4 million opening on roughly 700 screens) and 2016 featured The Light Between Oceans, the only question really is where the heck is Alicia Vikander? (Note: Her next film, The Earthquake Bird, isn’t expected until 2019.) Since we’ve hit a lull and the only movie left for me to review of films I’ve seen is Black Panther and I want to see it again before I review it, here’s the 5 movies from each month MHT is looking forward to seeing:Read More →

At the halfway point of the 2018 movie season, it’s a good time to check in and see which movies were on the top of their game this year. It’s unlikely we’ll be talking about any of them come Award season but there was plenty of cinematic success to recognize. Here’s the best films and performances according to Movie Hot Take for the first half of 2018 that will probably not even be thought of come Awards season:Read More →

We’re roughly 36 hours away from knowing who the Best Picture winner is and if they’ll screw up the announcement this time. For the first time in 3 years of predicting, MHT didn’t nail all of the Best Picture nominations (only 7 of 9). Could that mean the rest of the predictions will be off? Here’s who should and will win this year’s Oscars:Read More →

The 8 Star Wars Episodes Trailers, Ranked

This week, the trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was dropped on us. The official trailer on the Star Wars YouTube page has already surpassed 29 million views so there’s a pretty good chance you’ve seen it unless you’re under a rock (or my brother who still doesn’t get Star Wars). So, rather than just post the trailer and hope to piggyback a few clicks, I thought it would be more interesting to go back and watch all (okay, not all because the films have had multiple trailers) of the trailers from the first 7 movies along with the new one and rank them. Here’s how the trailers rank from worst (The Phantom Menace) to first (Now, you have to read further because I’m not just giving the whole list away!):Read More →

In: 2016, Lists, Weigh In

On Sunday, the Oscar winners will be announced. In January, we took a stab at predicting the Oscar nominees and the results were good including predicting 100% of the Best Picture nominees for the second straight year! Last year, we also predicted the winners and nailed 15 of 24 which isn’t terrible, either. Here are this year’s nominees, who will win and who should win:

Best Picture (Predicted 9/9 Nominees)

  • Arrival
  • Fences
  • Hacksaw Ridge
  • Hell or High Water
  • Hidden Figures
  • La La Land
  • Lion
  • Manchester by the Sea
  • Moonlight

Who Will Win?
