Thanks to a soft January, a cruise to the Caribbean and some other uncontrollable circumstances, it took a little longer than last year to get to 25 movies. There’s a good chance the 2018 pace will catch up to 2017 by June and typically, the best movies don’t come until the second half of the year anyway. (At this point last year, Logan, John Wick: Chapter 2 and Kedi were the top 3 movies of 2017.) While the box office doesn’t reflect it, ignoring Black Panther, of course, 2018 is shaping up to be slightly better than 2017 although the bottom of 2018 is shaping up to be a cesspool. We’re roughly 36 hours away from knowing who the Best Picture winner is and if they’ll screw up the announcement this time. For the first time in 3 years of predicting, MHT didn’t nail all of the Best Picture nominations (only 7 of 9). Could that mean the rest of the predictions will be off? Here’s who should and will win this year’s Oscars:Read More →
In less than 24 hours, we will know the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards. The MHT nominees would be much different than what we’ll hear from the Academy but it’s always fun to talk about who might be nominated. Here are the MHT predictions as well as who I’d nominate if mine were the only voice that mattered:
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi
- Lady Bird
- Darkest Hour
- Wind River
- I, Tonya
- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
- Baby Driver
- A Ghost Story
- The Disaster Artist

It took a little bit of time to get to 125 but MHT is finally there. Here’s a recap of the grades for the last 25 films seen as well as links to the first 100 grades of the year. Only 1 film in the last 25 landed in the Top 10 which is surprising for this time of year:
- The First 25 Movies of 2017, Graded (March 25, 2017)
- The Next 25 Movies of 2017, Graded (May 17, 2017)
- The Next Next 25 Movies of 2017, Graded (July 22, 2017)
- The Final 25 Movies of the First 100 Movies of 2017, Graded (September 17, 2017)
It took 16 days longer to reach 25 movies in 2017 than in 2016. I’m blaming the flu. Per previous milestones, it’s now time to reveal the grades (from 0 to 5 stars) for the first batch of movies watched in 2017. Last year, there were 3 movies — Zootopia, The Witch and Deadpool — with 4 stars or more but only 1 — Logan — in 2017. Only 7 films received a Thumbs Up last year, though. This year 10 movies graded out to a Thumbs Up and none (not even Rings) received 0 stars. Here are the first batch of grades of 2017:Read More →
On Sunday, the Oscar winners will be announced. In January, we took a stab at predicting the Oscar nominees and the results were good including predicting 100% of the Best Picture nominees for the second straight year! Last year, we also predicted the winners and nailed 15 of 24 which isn’t terrible, either. Here are this year’s nominees, who will win and who should win:
Best Picture (Predicted 9/9 Nominees)
- Hacksaw Ridge
- Hell or High Water
- Hidden Figures
- La La Land
- Manchester by the Sea

We’re a few hours away from the announcement of this year’s Oscar nominees. Like last year, now would be as good of a time as any to weigh in on who I think will be nominated for this year’s awards. And, for fun, who I’d nominate if my vote was the only one that counted:
- Sing Street
- Hell or High Water
- La La Land
- Everybody Wants Some!!
- The Witch

On a crazy Wednesday, I was invited on the War Machine vs War Horse Podcast to discuss A Hologram for the King. Because Wednesday was such a crazy day, I have to share more details as that was the day I endured Nina and plowed through Elvis & Nixon. (I also tried Pretzel Bites at the theater for the first time in years and they are no substitute for popcorn!) While seeing Nina, I was initially the only person in the theater but as the previews rolled, another person came in and sat directly next to me… the entire theater was empty other than us two (does that make it a date?). Then between Nina and Elvis & Nixon, I jumped on the podcast. I won’t even mention what I saw in the bathroom at Elvis & Nixon involving soiling and undergarments. Finally, on my way home, I ran over a piece of metal and flattened not one but two tires, had to wait 3 hours for a tow truck and had to Uber my way home (thanks, Giorgios!).
In light of all of the trials and tribulations, give the War Machine vs War Horse Podcast a listen as host Michael Dennison and I scratch the surface on A Hologram for the King before discussing two other films — 12 Angry Men and The Big Kahuna.
Oh, and here’s my review of A Hologram from the King.
We’re 25 movies deep into 2016 reviewing all but 3 movies that have made it to 500 screens or more. Sorry Kung Fu Panda 3, Fifty Shades of Black and The Other Side of the Door (which is in the plans to see tonight).
Personally, I’ve never been a fan of ratings for movies. The old thumbs up/down system has always been my favorite. But then what do you do with those movies that fall in the middle? Anyway, let’s avoid going off on a tangent about movie ratings (we’ll save that for another day) and grade the first 25 films of 2016 seen on a scale of 0-5 stars (yes, 0… we’re glaring at you, Norm of the North!)Read More →
In a few hours, the Oscar winners will be announced. Earlier this year, we took a stab at predicting the Oscar nominees and didn’t do too bad of a job.
