The First 25 Movies of the Second 100 Movies of 2017, Graded

It took a little bit of time to get to 125 but MHT is finally there. Here’s a recap of the grades for the last 25 films seen as well as links to the first 100 grades of the year. Only 1 film in the last 25 landed in the Top 10 which is surprising for this time of year:

  • The First 25 Movies of 2017, Graded (March 25, 2017)
  • The Next 25 Movies of 2017, Graded (May 17, 2017)
  • The Next Next 25 Movies of 2017, Graded (July 22, 2017)
  • The Final 25 Movies of the First 100 Movies of 2017, Graded (September 17, 2017)

The “Thumbs Up” Group

Thank You For Your Service 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

I didn’t expect this one to land at the top of the list but the directorial debut of Jason Hall, the screenwriter for American Sniper, surprised me and Miles Teller’s performance was one of this year’s best so far.

Battle of the Sexes 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
Blade Runner 2049 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

The site doesn’t yet have a review for Blade Runner 2049 but it should be coming soon. It’s not because it requires that much thought. It was just an oversight.

American Made 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
LBJ 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
Thor: Ragnarok 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
Same Kind of Different As Me 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
Happy Death Day 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
The Mountain Between Us 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
The LEGO Ninjago Movie 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
Marshall 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)

The group at 3-1/2 stars is both large and varied with a couple of fact-based flicks around the latest superhero flick, a Groundhog Day for teens, another LEGO movie and the Idris Elba/Kate Winslet disaster romance. (Not Titanic 2.)

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
The Foreigner 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
Stronger 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
A Bad Moms Christmas 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

The 7th and 8th fact-based film of this group along with a slight change of pace for Jackie Chan and the return of Bad Moms.

The “Thumbs Eh” Group

Flatliners 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
Only the Brave 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
Brad’s Status 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)

I am pretty sure I liked Flatliners more than anyone who writes about movies and was more eh about Only the Brave than most. As for Brad’s Status, it’s just hard to like Ben Stiller in this one.

The “Thumbs Down” Group

American Assassin 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)

This isn’t the movie to launch a franchise.

Jigsaw 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5)

This is the movie that could end a franchise.

Victoria & Abdul 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5)
Geostorm 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5)
Suburbicon 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5)

The half star for Geostorm and Suburbicon might be too generous but we’re getting close to Christmas.

The Snowman 0 out of 5 stars (0 / 5)

One of the biggest waste of times of 2017.
