Hot Take: That Awkward Moment (2014)

Hot Take: You know that moment you end up watching a movie every time it’s on even though you’d never ever admit you think it’s a good movie. I call that moment the guilty pleasure.

This buddy romantic comedy with romantic undertones has more holes than Swiss cheese. The trouble is Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan look like they are having such a good time together as three friends who make a pact (which at some point becomes a bet) to stay single, it’s hard to hate the film.

That Awkward Moment has such a rhythm to it, you find a way to not give a crap about the missteps. It’s painfully obvious this isn’t a good movie but it has enough laughs and charisma to overcome it’s shortcomings. And when I say overcome, I mean you’ll watch it when you accidentally stumble on it when you don’t feel like getting out of bed on a day off or when you want to fill a two hour void and you see the title in the On Demand menu.

Basically, it’s American Pie is finally out of school but still hasn’t matured enough to stop making stupid bro pacts. Or what if three of the guys the Sex & the City women date for an episode were friends and starred in a movie.

“Spoiler Free” Pros

  • Just Three Dudes Hangin’ Out Scenes
Efron, Teller and Jordan’s chats are the highlight of That Awkward Moment.
  • Mackenzie Davis as Chelsea
Of the female objects of affection, Davis’ Chelsea is the most developed and most interesting. She’s not the poster child for feminism but they’re just trying to make you laugh, there’s no attempt at a social statement.
  • The Credits Had Some Nice Laughs
Is it rare for a comedy to not have laughs mixed in the credits these days? I’m glad it is because That Awkward Moment has very humorous credits.

“Spoiler Free” Cons

  • When the Hell Did This Become A Bet?
To support their friend who is going through a divorce, two guys who have no intention of getting in a relationship make a stupid pact none of the three will get in a relationship. At some point, this becomes an even dumber bet. There’s no consequences discussed or even the fact that it’s a bet BUT they sure don’t want to lose the bet.
  • Men Are Dumb But Women Will Love Them Anyway
Maybe if you have abs like Efron that’s how it works. This is not the feminist film you have been waiting for.
  • What A Waste Of Michael B. Jordan
This was Jordan’s follow up to his “breakout” performance in Fruitvale Station. He’s better than second fiddle (sometimes third fiddle… is that a thing?) to Efron and Teller.
