Hot Take: Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos

Hot Take: A fun, laugh out loud animated film in Spanish with English subtitles. While it’s geared toward younger audiences, the PG-13 rating, animated fighting and some racy humor to appease the adult audience makes Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos unique.

After viewing the trailer for Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos (which means “A Rooster With Many Eggs” in English), I had to see it. While I’m not an animated movie aficionado and seldom see movies with subtitles, the trailer was very funny.

Overall, Un Gallo has a handful of laugh out loud moments. There are plenty of jokes geared toward a younger audience. However, there is some humor with sexual innuendo an audience would be unlikely to get but that would resonate with the adult viewers. There’s enough of these types of jokes to pin a PG-13 rating on the film.

The story isn’t very original in either the animated or live action realm. The main character, Toto, is destined to be a morning singing rooster (is that the technical term) but dreams of one day becoming a cockfighter. When the farm is in trouble, he must realize his dream and fight to save the home of his family and friends. Sound familiar?

The fast, offbeat and hilarious

“Spoiler Free” Pros

  • The Adultish Humor
  • Paying Homage
There are great references and great reverence to other animated work and
  • The Flashback Scenes
There are flashbacks told in old school, hand drawn animation compared to the main film which is CGI animation. It’s a nice touch.

“Spoiler Free” Cons

  • Some Will Be Put Off By Toto’s Aspirations
Essentially, the film is about cockfighting. Some of the more PC audience might find the idea offensive.
  • Lost in Translation
Occasionally, a joke or two misfires due to the Spanish-to-English translation. Spanish-to-English rap is especially detrimental when trying to be humorous.
  • The End is a Little Confusing
Maybe the confusing ending had something to do with the translation. The message of the movie didn’t match the end. Or maybe it did. Or maybe I just missed it because of how much I laughed during the film.
