Movie Hot Take Predicts the Oscar Winners

In a few hours, the Oscar winners will be announced. Earlier this year, we took a stab at predicting the Oscar nominees and didn’t do too bad of a job.

Best Picture (Predicted 8/8 Nominees)

  • The Big Short
  • Bridge of Spies
  • Brooklyn
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Martian
  • The Revenant
  • Room
  • Spotlight

Who Will Win?

The Revenant

Call it a two horse race between The Revenant and Spotlight with The Big Short lurking in the shadows.

Best Director (Predicted 4/5 Nominees)

  • Lenny Abramson (Room)
  • Alejandro G. Inarritu (The Revenant)
  • Tom McCarthy (Spotlight)
  • Adam McKay (The Big Short)
  • George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Who Will Win?

Alejandro G. Inarritu

If Inarritu doesn’t win, Miller might take home the Oscar. But we’ll say Inarritu “bearly” edges out Miller.

Best Actor (Predicted 4/5 Nominees)

  • Bryan Cranston (Trumbo)
  • Matt Damon (The Martian)
  • Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)
  • Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs)
  • Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl)

Who Will Win?

Leonardo DiCaprio

This is Leo’s year mainly because after Dicaprio the other four likely split the vote.

Best Actress (Predicted 3/5 Nominees)

  • Cater Blanchett (Carol)
  • Brie Larson (Room)
  • Jennifer Lawrence (Joy)
  • Charlotte Rampling (45 Years)
  • Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn)

Who Will Win?

Brie Larson

If you were to bet on one winner tonight, it would be Larson.

Best Supporting Actor (Predicted 2/5 Nominees)

  • Christian Bale (The Big Short)
  • Tom Hardy (The Revenant)
  • Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight)
  • Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies)
  • Sylvester Stallone (Creed)

Who Will Win?

Sylvester Stallone

Admittedly, this has been the toughest category to handicap. Stallone and Rylance stand out as the probable outcome.

Best Supporting Actress (Predicted 3/5 Nominees)

  • Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight)
  • Rooney Mara (Carol)
  • Rachel McAdams (Spotlight)
  • Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)
  • Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs)

Who Will Win?

Alicia Vikander

This is probably a “heart over head” pick as Winslet might win instead but Vikander deserves recognition for the year she had and here’s hoping she gets cumulative credit for her performances in both The Danish Girl and Ex Machina.

Best Adapted Screenplay (Predicted 4/5 Nominees)

  • Emma Donoghue (Room)
  • Drew Goddard (The Martian)
  • Nick Hornby (Brooklyn)
  • Adam McKay, Charles Randolph (The Big Short)
  • Phyllis Nagy (Carol)

Who Will Win?

Adam McKay & Charles Randolph

Let’s try this again because it worked the first time… I hope I’m wrong and Donoghue’s screenplay for Room knocks off the field.

Best Original Screenplay (Predicted 3/5)

  • Andrea Berloff, Jonathan Herman, S. Leigh Savidge, Alan Wenkus (Straight Outta Compton)
  • Matthew Charman, Ethan Coen, Joel Coen (Bridge of Spies)
  • Josh Cooley, Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve (Inside Out)
  • Alex Garland (Ex Machina)
  • Tom McCarthy, Josh Singer (Spotlight)

Who Will Win?

Tom McCarthy & Josh Singer

Call it the consolation prize for Spotlight.

Best Cinematography (Predicted 5/5 Nominees)

  • Roger Deakins (Sicario)
  • Edward Lachman (Carol)
  • Emmanuel Lubezki (The Revenant)
  • Robert Richardson (The Hateful Eight)
  • John Seale (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Who Will Win?

Emmanuel Lubezki

While you could make a case for any other nominee in this category that bear scene though.

Best Original Score (Predicted 3/5 Nominees)

  • Carter Burwell (Carol)
  • Johann Johannsson (Sicario)
  • Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight)
  • Thomas Newman (Bridge of Spies)
  • John Williams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens)

Who Will Win?

Ennio Morricone

Consider this a legacy award for Morricone. He’s been nominated 5 times previously without a win.

Best Visual Effects (Predicted 3/5 Nominees)

  • Ex Machina
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Martian
  • The Revenant
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Who Will Win?

Mad Max: Fury Road

Star Wars will win something but Mad Max won’t get shut out either.

Best Animated Feature Film (Predicted 3/5 Nominees)

  • Anomalisa
  • Boy and the World
  • Inside Out
  • Shaun the Sheep
  • When Marnie Was There

Who Will Win?

Inside Out

Any other winner would be a shock.
