Hot Take: About as ridiculous, ugly and unintelligent as you’ll find. Oh and not funny, too!
When you see a movie like Meet the Blacks, you find yourself asking, “How does this get made?” Taking a look at the releases already backed by Freestyle Releasing and you see they’ve set the bar low. In the last 12 months, their most successful release was The Letters — a Mother Teresa biopic — which struggled at the box office. They also released two of the bigger bombs to hit theaters with the animated Hell and Back and The Masked Saint — a Christian wrestling flick. Oh, and there was Zombeavers, too! Yeah, the bar is THAT low.
But what about Meet the Blacks? The movie stars Mike Epps as Karl Black, a struggling business man who steals from a drug dealer (Charlie Murphy) and moves his family with the cash to Beverly Hills to escape “The Purge” because rich white people don’t participate in “The Purge”. Did I mention this is a parody of The Purge? The film starts off with Black squaring off with the security guard to his gated community (the joke is black people can’t live in a nice neighborhood) and, in the very next scene, Karl argues with an African (Michael Blackson) from Chicago (where Karl previously lived) who is trying to serve him papers. How did the African get in the gated community when Karl, who lives in the community, has such a difficult time? Sadly, Wait, before we start talking about Karl’s son whom everyone calls Carl’s Jr. and dresses like a vampire, let’s stop wasting time being overly analytical here…
Meet the Blacks is unintelligent, stereotypical, racist toward pretty much every race and a very unfunny parody. It crosses lines but for literally no reason whatsoever. If you want to see Mike Epps get into shouting matches and doing “yo momma” jokes and other snaps with Michael Blackson, Mike Tyson and Lavelle Crawford, this movie probably still isn’t for you. It isn’t for anybody with the desire to see anything even slightly entertaining. There’s more to be said but there’s no point in wasting your time. This is the worst movie of 2016 as of April 1st and if something beats it, it’ll have to be awful.
“Spoiler Free” Pros
- You’ll Realize How Bad This Is Early On And Can Sneak Into Another Movie
Seriously, it’s either that or ask for your money back. - Michael Blackson
Blackson’s character, while completely stereotypical, inappropriate and offensive, is very funny. You won’t feel good about yourself for laughing but sometimes even completely inappropriate comedy is funny.
“Spoiler Free” Cons
- Everything Else?
It’s bad… really bad.
