The “Thumbs Up” Group
Everybody Wants Some!! (5 / 5) REVIEW
Best film of 2016… so far! Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Dazed and Confused go to college.
Eye in the Sky (4.5 / 5) REVIEW
Hello, My Name Is Doris (4.5 / 5) REVIEW
Helen Mirren is phenomenal in Eye in the Sky. The most tense film of the year. Sally Field shines in Hello, My Name Is Doris. One of the most delightful surprises of 2016.
The Jungle Book (4 / 5) REVIEW
Demolition (4 / 5) REVIEW
Midnight Special (4 / 5) REVIEW
A big budget blockbuster and two indie films. The Jungle Book took a more serious approach to Disney’s animated fever dream of the 60s, Demolition let Jake Gyllenhaal shine and Midnight Special brought back some nostalgic Sci-Fi.
10 Cloverfield Lane (3.5 / 5) REVIEW
J.J. Abrams’ secret film and part of the Cloververse (that’s what I’m calling it!) was very good… not great.
High Strung (3 / 5) REVIEW
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (3 / 5) REVIEW
Both films weren’t cinematic masterpieces but both featured inspired performances from casts that looked like they were having a lot of fun making a movie. These films had a definite identity and understood what they were. Those types of films get a lot of latitude.
The “Thumbs Eh” Group
The Program (2.5 / 5) REVIEW
Barbershop: The Next Cut (2.5 / 5) REVIEW
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2.5 / 5) REVIEW
Miracles from Heaven (2.5 / 5) REVIEW
The Bronze (2.5 / 5) REVIEW
All of these movies had a reason to watch and a reason to avoid. Don’t tell anyone I said to avoid Batman v Superman, though. I still haven’t cashed my Disney check.
The “Thumbs Down” Group
The Boss (2 / 5) REVIEW
The Perfect Match (2 / 5) REVIEW
The Young Messiah (2 / 5) REVIEW
The Adderall Diaries (2 / 5) REVIEW
I Saw the Light (2 / 5) REVIEW
The Brothers Grimsby (2 / 5) REVIEW
If only Hank Williams would have named that song The Light I Saw.
The Other Side of the Door (1 / 5) REVIEW
The lady in the trailer said don’t open the door. How was I supposed to know she meant the door to the theater?
Hardcore Henry (0.5 / 5) REVIEW
Criminal (0.5 / 5) REVIEW
The gimmicky first person view of Henry and the over-the-top acting of Costner are the only reasons these films even received half of a star.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant (0 / 5) REVIEW
Meet the Blacks (0 / 5) REVIEW
A sequel no one cared about and a parody no one asked for. The two worst films of 2016 to date.
