Ben Affleck’s brother, Don Johnson’s daughter, Ralph Fiennes’ brother and Jerry Stiller’s son headline this week’s batch of releases. Should you buy, rent, stream or skip The Finest Hours, How to Be Single, Risen and Zoolander 2? Read on to find out about the DVD releases for May 24:
The Finest Hours (Read our Movie Hot Take from earlier this year)
Super Simple Synopsis: The greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history.
Why Buy?
You love a good, action packed thriller with a solid cast and a side of sappiness. You’re a fan of films based on real events.
Why Rent?
You think the movie sounds good but you know how Eric Bana has a habit of ruining every movie he shows up in. (Remember when you were really into Funny People until Eric Bana showed up near the end and it just fell apart? I do!)
Why Stream?
You saw the trailer and thought this would be good in theaters and missed it but can’t imagine it translating well to a smaller screen. (Even if it’s still a 60″ behemoth!)
Why Skip?
You know all about movies released in January that would have the look and feel of a summer movie and you’re not falling for it anymore!
MHT Verdict: Buy it!
Even though it came out in January, The Finest Hours was the best movie to come out in January.
How to Be Single (Read our Movie Hot Take from earlier this year)
Super Simple Synopsis: Alice is single. Watch her learn how to be.
Why Buy?
You love mindless 20-something comedies that play on a loop on HBO eventually and you cancelled your HBO subscription.
Why Rent?
You saw A Bigger Splash and realize Dakota Johnson isn’t nearly as bad as she was in 50 Shades of Grey and maybe you should give her another chance.
Why Stream?
You’re single and need some catharsis.
Why Skip?
You’re single and prefer porn.
MHT Verdict: Rent it!
How to Be Single was surprisingly funny and entertaining. Dakota Johnson was surprisingly winsome and charming.
Risen (Read our Movie Hot Take from earlier this year)
Super Simple Synopsis: A murdered Jesus comes back from the dead seen through the eyes of one of his murderers.
Why Buy?
You prefer your Jesus tales to have a happier ending than The Passion of the Christ.
Why Rent?
You want to see exactly what the MPAA means by Biblical violence. You think Joseph Fiennes is a good actor even if he did portray Michael Jackson in a British TV movie.
Why Stream?
You want to know about the guy you keep asking to take the wheel.
Why Skip?
You like to picture Jesus in a Tuxedo T-Shirt because it says you wanna be formal but you’re here to party, too. You like to party so you like your Jesus to party.
MHT Verdict: Stream it!
Risen is a mediocre, occasionally interesting retelling of the Resurrection with a unique point of view though same perspective.
Zoolander 2 (Read our Movie Hot Take from earlier this year)
Super Simple Synopsis: Like Zoolander only even less funny and really stale.
Why Buy?
You lost a bet.
Why Rent?
You have too much time on your hands.
Why Stream?
You fell asleep on the remote and accidentally hit play.
Why Skip?
You’ve lived this long without a Zoolander sequel, what’s another 15 years or so?
MHT Verdict: Skip it!
Zoolander 2 is about as unnecessary as steak at a vegan restaurant and just as insulting.
I liked Zoolander 2!!
