It’s summer season! Most likely the biggest movie of the summer is Captain America: Civil War because (a) it’s the biggest crossover film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date, (b) Marvel has a track record of monstrous comic book hits and (c) Disney has already bribed us all to give Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice great reviews so of course they’ve created a huge conspiracy to bump up the box office of Captain America: Civil War to win the summer. The moment has arrived! Oh and A Bigger Splash comes out, too. Here are the releases for the week of May 6th:
Captain America: Civil War
Theater Count: 4,226
Starring: Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, War Machine, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man, Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Tom Holland, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, William Hurt
Buzz:
Marvel and Disney have set this up perfectly. The trailers, the cross-promotion and the way Captain America: Civil War has mastered social media have made this movie a can’t miss. Unlike Batman v Superman which had the allure of putting DC’s two biggest stars on the big screen together to carry whatever they decided to put out there, we’ve seen most of these Marvel characters on the big screen together. Critical response has been hugely positive, too. That won’t hurt it’s long-term success.
3 Things to Know:
- Thor and The Hulk won’t make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War but we’ll get our first glimpse of Spider-Man and Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Captain America: Civil War is based on a major comic storyline from a 2006 mini-series.
- There is a mid-credit stinger and a post-credit stinger so lock yourself in when the credits roll. (Plus, that Alt-J song is pretty good, too!)

MHT Hot Take:
See it! Spoiler alert: The review for Captain America: Civil War should be out tomorrow and it’ll be glowing!
A Bigger Splash
Theater Count: 5
Starring: Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts
Buzz:
A Bigger Splash is smartly sticking to New York and Los Angeles in it’s opening week with expansion coming later. The early reviews are solid and the trailer works well. Fortunately, with it’s platform-sized release, A Bigger Splash doesn’t have to worry about getting lost in the Marvel cinematic tsunami.
3 Things to Know:
- A Bigger Splash is a loose remake of a relatively unknown 1969 French film La Piscine.
- Tilda Swinton’s character was initially an actress but on Swinton’s suggestion, her character was moved from the world of acting to the world of music. She plays a David Bowie-style musician.
- Swinton did interviews as her character and graced the cover of AnOther Magazine for their Autumn/Winter 2015 issue.

MHT Hot Take:
See it! Unless you’re in New York or Los Angeles, this won’t be on the radar until at least next week so you can get Captain America: Civil War out of your system by then.
