BuRStS #20: Midnight Special, The Brothers Grimsby, The Forest, Knight of Cups & My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

With five releases this week, MHT has one to buy, one to rent, one to stream and one to skip. Wait! That’s only four… There’s a wild card in the mix. Check out the five new DVD releases for the week of June 21st:

Midnight Special (Check out our Movie Hot Take from earlier this year)

Super Simple Synopsis: Can a family get their boy (who might be an alien) back to his people? Not if the government or a crazy cult has their way.

Why Buy?

You loved classic Sci-Fi in the ’80s and wish more movies would be made that way. You love Sci-Fi with a story.

Why Rent?

You think director Jeff Nichols and actor Michael Shannon are a great combination.

Why Stream?

You’re not the biggest Sci-Fi fan in the world but you think Jaeden Lieberher is one of the best young actors in Hollywood.

Why Skip?

You’d rather have a nooner.

MHT Verdict: Buy it!

One of the best movies of the first half of the year, Midnight Special is currently ranked 15th out of the 86 movies seen in 2016.

The Brothers Grimsby (Check out our Movie Hot Take from earlier this year)

Super Simple Synopsis: Sacha Baron Cohen. (Isn’t that simple enough for you?)

Why Buy?

You like Sacha Baron Cohen so much, you paid full price to own Bruno rather than waiting to grab it at a used DVD store for $0.49. (Writer’s note: I passed on it. Even at $0.49.)

Why Rent?

You want to see what happens with Cohen and Mark Strong in the elephant scene.

Why Stream?

You figure this is the easiest way to watch The Brothers Grimsby and turn it off halfway through in disgust.

Why Skip?

You’ve had enough of Sacha Baron Cohen’s antics.

MHT Verdict: Stream it!

The Brothers Grimsby isn’t even good cinema but there are a few ridiculously funny sequences that should be seen.

The Forest (Check out our Movie Hot Take from earlier this year)

Super Simple Synopsis: Twin goes to find her sister in the suicide forest of Japan. This should go well.

Why Buy?

You’re familiar with the legend of the Aokigahara Forest and are fascinated by it.

Why Rent?

Your horror sweet tooth is craving another taste.

Why Stream?

You like the idea of streaming The Forest. It sounds poetic almost.

Why Skip?

You can’t see it for the trees.

MHT Verdict: Skip it!

This ho-hum horror has a few jump scares but very little else is terrifying. (Apparently, this was listed in BuRStS #10 and damn if the same reason wasn’t given to “Skip it!”)

Knight of Cups (Did Not Review)

Super Simple Synopsis: Did you see the preview? Good luck simplifying that!

Why Buy?

You look at that cast — Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Wes Bentley, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Joe Manganiello, Nick Offerman — and think, “How could I go wrong?”

Why Rent?

You look at other Terrence Malick films with great casts but lukewarm results and think, “Maybe I could go wrong!”

Why Stream?

You like the cast, you like Terrence Malick but you don’t love either one and, let’s face it, this movie looks a little weird.

Why Skip?

You think Tarot cards are bullshit.

MHT Verdict: Rent it!

Christian Bale has us at, “Hello!”

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (Check out our Movie Hot Take from earlier this year)

Super Simple Synopsis: Did you see the first one? More of that!

Why Buy?

You were one of the people who kept the original in theaters for a year by seeing it 3-4 times.

Why Rent?

You liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding but didn’t love it.

Why Stream?

You cared just enough about the first to wonder what happened to those characters.

Why Skip?

You hate weddings and don’t feel like buying a new dress.

MHT Verdict: Rent it!

Don’t worry, if the disc you rent acts up just spray some Windex on it and it’ll work just fine.
