The Next Next 25 Movies of 2016, Graded

After recapping the first 25 movies seen of 2016 on March 9th and the next 25 movies seen of 2016 on April 21st, it took 45 days to see the next batch of 25. Currently, 4 of these are in the top 10 of 2016 including Sing Street, the best movie (so far) of 2016. MHT also saw the worst movie (so far) of 2016… Mother’s Day. Here is the third batch of 25 movies of 2016, graded on a scale of 0-5 stars:

The “Thumbs Up” Group

Sing Street 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5) REVIEW
Totally expected to like this film but not love it this much. By the end, I was tempted to give it a standing ovation and I was the only one in the theater.

Captain America: Civil War 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) REVIEW
The Nice Guys 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) REVIEW
Keanu 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) REVIEW
A trio of really fun trips to the theater. Crowe and Gosling formed a new duo we want to see more of, Key & Peele made the jump to the big screen and two other cats — Keanu and the Black Panther — stole the show.

The Meddler 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) REVIEW
Love & Friendship 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) REVIEW
Miles Ahead 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) REVIEW
Susan Sarandon (in The Meddler), Kate Beckinsale and Tom Bennett (in Love & Friendship) and Don Cheadle (in Miles Ahead) should all be on the short list when we start talking about Oscar-worthy performances.

A Bigger Splash 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) REVIEW
Me Before You 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) REVIEW
Green Room 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) REVIEW
Three very different films. A Bigger Splash covered the art house audience, Me Before You pleased the general public and Green Room grabbed that alternative crowd.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) REVIEW
The cheese stands alone. Just funny enough to make the recommend side of things and it recycled enough from the first to say, “Please quit while you’re ahead.”

The “Thumbs Eh” Group

X-Men: Apocalypse 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5) REVIEW
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5) REVIEW
The Man Who Knew Infinity 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5) REVIEW
Three of the most forgettable films of 2016. They were okay to watch but left very little impression. Except that scene with Quicksilver in X-Men: Apocalypse… that was impressive.

The “Thumbs Down” Group

Elvis & Nixon 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5) REVIEW
Money Monster 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5) REVIEW
A Hologram for the King 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5) REVIEW
The Huntsman: Winter’s War 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5) REVIEW
Again, the biggest section of movies falls just below the recommend line. This group features great actors — Michael Shannon, Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt — in not so great movies. They aren’t bad enough to dump but aren’t good enough to ask to go steady in the first place.

Regression 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5) REVIEW
Unfortunately, I don’t have to be hypnotized to remember this viewing experience. Maybe I can be hypnotized to forget it?

The Darkness 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5) REVIEW
The Angry Birds Movie 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5) REVIEW
Papa: Hemingway in Cuba 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5) REVIEW
Nina 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5) REVIEW
Two biopics, a low budget horror flick and a movie based on a video game. Does it surprise you this group is near the end of the line?

Ratchet & Clank 0 out of 5 stars (0 / 5) REVIEW
Mother’s Day 0 out of 5 stars (0 / 5) REVIEW
Admittedly, I remember absolutely nothing from when I watched Ratchet & Clank. I can’t say the same for Mother’s Day which, if you subjected your mother to that, you should all be ashamed.
