We’re halfway through the 2016 season and while it is unlikely any movies mentioned will still be even thought of come Award season, MHT would like to recognize the best films and performances of the first half of 2016:
Best Picture
- Sing Street
- Everybody Wants Some!!
- Eye in the Sky
And the winner is…
Sing Street
Without a doubt, the best movie of 2016 so far. While nothing particular carries the film, writer/director John Carney has found his niche when it comes to filmmaking in infusing music and drama with a hint of comedy.
Best Actor
- Don Cheadle, Miles Ahead
- Paul Dano, Swiss Army Man
- Matthew McCounaghey, Free State of Jones
And the winner is…
Don Cheadle
One of the most underrated performers in Hollywood, Cheadle’s passion project allows for him to show off some serious acting chops. The film may be uneven but Cheadle’s performance is brilliant.
Best Actress
- Sally Field, Hello, My Name Is Doris
- Susan Sarandon, The Meddler
- Kate Beckinsale, Love & Friendship
And the winner is…
Sally Field
As Doris, I like Sally Field. I really, really like her.
Best Supporting Actor
- Tom Bennett, Love & Friendship
- Daniel Radcliffe, Swiss Army Man
- Ralph Fiennes, A Bigger Splash
And the winner is…
Tom Bennett
While it’s tough to compete with a talking corpse and an eccentric record producer, Bennett’s buffoonery shines above all else.
Best Supporting Actress
- Lea Seydoux, The Lobster
- Kate Winslet, Triple 9
- Holliday Grainger, The Finest Hours
And the winner is…
Lea Seydoux
Easily the weakest category of the first half of the year, someone had to win.
Best Animated Film
- Zootopia
- Finding Dory
- The Angry Birds Movie
And the winner is…
Zootopia
Zootopia technically could have made the Best Picture list as well. As a side note, The Angry Birds Movie being nominated shows just how bad the animated offerings become after Finding Dory.
Best Screenplay
- Daniel Schienert & Daniel Kwan, Swiss Army Man
- Whit Stillman, Love & Friendship
- John Carney, Sing Street
And the winner is…
Daniel Schienert & Daniel Kwan
Normally, there are two categories for Best Screenplay but here we combined the two. Swiss Army Man‘s peculiarity is driven by some sharp, witty and insane dialog.
Best Director
- Richard Linklater, Everybody Wants Some!!
- Robert Eggers, The Witch
- Shane Black, The Nice Guys
Linklater can turn very little into a highly watchable masterpiece which is exactly what Everybody Wants Some!! is.
Best Cinematography
- The Shallows
- The Jungle Book
- Captain America: Civil War
The visuals of The Shallows were eye catching and enhanced the popcorn flick of the summer.
Yay I love this post!!! 🙂
