After last week’s crowded slate of releases, this week’s list of releases is the shortest since starting BuRStS. With only 2 movies to choose from for the week of August 9th, there isn’t much of a selection for the week of August 9th. Here’s this week’s recommendations on what to buy, rent, stream or skip:
A Hologram for the King —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—
Super Simple Synopsis: A salesman in a strange land selling an advanced communication technology.
Why Buy?
It’s Tom Hanks, how can you go wrong?
Why Rent?
Well, there was that time he made Joe Versus the Volcano…
Why Stream?
And Bonfire of the Vanities.
Why Skip?
You’re still watching everything that came out last week.
MHT Verdict: Rent it!
While A Hologram for the King wasn’t the best Tom Hanks movie in the world, it was still Tom Hanks. Even the worst Tom Hanks movies are still watchable. Yes, that even includes Bonfire of the Vanities.
Fathers and Daughters –NO REVIEW–
Super Simple Synopsis: The stories of a writer struggling with being a widower and a father and 27 years later, his daughter and her struggles connecting.
Why Buy?
The script was on The Black List in 2012 and you are a fan of movies that were made after appearing on The Black List.
Why Rent?
Amanda Seyfried and Russell Crowe are reliable actors who usually do solid work although they both have some duds on their resume.
Why Stream?
Screw Seyfried and Crowe, this movie has Aaron Paul, bitch!
Why Skip?
You still haven’t recovered from Mother’s Day so now you are scared to watch any movie with a parental unit in the title.
MHT Verdict: Stream it!
If there were more offerings this week, it’s likely this would be a skip as Rotten Tomatoes and other aggregate sites have been unkind to this film as was the box office where it generated just $5 million during its release.
