This is one of those weeks at the movies where it feels more like quantity than quality. The week feels vaguely familiar as there’s a Blair Witch reboot, a Bridget Jones sequel, a controversial Oliver Stone project, a faith-based film and a role that might get Eddie Murphy nominated for an Oscar. There’s also 3 platform releases so if you try to see everything that comes out, it’s going to be a long week. Here’s MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not see for the week of September 16th:
Blair Witch
Theater Count: 3,121
Starring: James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez
See the Trailer:
MHT Hot Take:
See it! There’s mixed reviews coming out of the gate but low budget horror films don’t come out every week. What? They do? Oh. Well, see it anyway.
Bridget Jones’s Baby
Theater Count: 2,927
Starring: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey
See the Trailer:
MHT Hot Take:
Skip it! Consider it a personal favor that will put me forever in your debt. Please abstain from the latest incarnation of the Bridget Jones franchise.
Snowden
Theater Count: 2,443
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Nicholas Cage
See the Trailer:
MHT Hot Take:
See it! Nothing like a heavy handed take down of the U.S. government, Oliver Stone style.
Hillsong – Let Hope Rise
Theater Count: 816
See the Trailer:
MHT Hot Take:
Skip it! It’s fair to say a documentary about a faith-based musical group targets a niche audience. For my money, there’s something else out there worth seeing.
Mr. Church
Theater Count: 300
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Britt Robertson
See the Trailer:
MHT Hot Take:
See it! Eddie Murphy could find himself in the Oscar mix with this one… if they can remember back all the way to September come voting.
Wild Oats
Theater Count: 100
Starring: Jessica Lange, Shirley MacLaine, Demi Moore, Billy Connolly
See the Trailer:
MHT Hot Take:
Skip it! It’s a running joke to criticize movies that appear to be Lifetime movies that actually end up on the big screen. In this case, Wild Oats is exactly that as the film premièred on Lifetime on August 22nd.
Victor
Theater Count: 12
Starring: Khleo Thomas, Haley Ramm, Rick Gonzalez
See the Trailer:
MHT Hot Take:
Skip it! It might be okay but Victor appears to be one of those movies worth waiting for the home video option.
Miss Stevens
Theater Count: 2
Starring: Lily Rabe, Timothee Chalamet, Rob Huebel, Lili Reinhart
See the Trailer:
MHT Hot Take:
See it! You might have to wait to see if it expands but Miss Stevens has critics exclaiming its virtues.
