BuRStS #38 (Part 2): Star Trek Beyond, Anthropoid, Nine Lives & The Sea of Trees

A summer blockbuster sequel, one of the worst titles of the year, one of the worst concepts of the year (Kevin Spacey is a cat!) and a rare Matthew McConaughey misfire round out the 2nd batch of movies ready for home consumption in this week’s BuRStS. Here’s the movies to buy, rent, stream and skip for the week of November 1st:

Star Trek Beyond —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: Member Spock? Member Captain Kirk? I member!

Why Buy?

You have somehow not suffered from sequel fatigue and are a Trekkie.

Why Rent?

The sequel fatigue is enough to make you not want to buy it but not enough to make you not want to see it.

Why Stream?

Because you’re binge watching everything Star Trek.

Why Skip?

J.J. Abrams only produced this one.

MHT Verdict: Buy it!

As revealed here previously, sequel fatigue has set in around these parts but this latest Star Trek was a fun ride.

Anthropoid —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: The code name for the operation to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich during WWII.

Why Buy?

You’re a WWII movie buff.

Why Rent?

Let’s be real: Anthropoid is fun to say even if it is a terrible title.

Why Stream?

Cillian Murphy is usually pretty good.

Why Skip?

Like sequel fatigue, movies about WWII have a certain level of fatigue at this point, too.

MHT Verdict: Rent it!

A solid albeit somewhat unspectacular film that was ill-fitting as summer fare.

Nine Lives —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: Kevin Spacey’s spirit gets stuck in a cat. Yup, that’s a real movie that someone paid him to make.

Why Buy?

The YouTube cat videos have brainwashed you.

Why Rent?

It’s got a cat in it. How bad could it be?

Why Stream?

Christopher Walken is in it. How bad could it be?

Why Skip?

You watched the trailer and realize just how bad it could be.

MHT Verdict: Skip it!

If you only have a limited number of movie lives, don’t waste one on this dud.

The Sea of Trees –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: Matthew McConaughey goes on a spiritual journey in the woods of Japan. Alright, alright, alright!

Why Buy?

Because Matthew McConaughey is fabulous.

Why Rent?

Gus Van Sant directs.

Why Stream?

It’s either this or that Kevin Spacey cat movie.

Why Skip?

Even with McCounaghey, Van Sant, Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe, The Sea of Trees scored a lowly 10% on the Tomatometer.

MHT Verdict: Stream it!

It has to be better than Nine Lives. Right?
