BuRStS #48: March 7, 2017 featuring Jackie & Moana

8 movies were made available for home viewing this week with Jackie & Moana leading the way. Here’s what you should buy, rent, stream and skip for the week of March 7th:

Buy It!

Jackie —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: The JFK Assassination as seen through the eyes of Jackie Kennedy.

Why Buy?

It was the best movie of 2016 (Yes, I know It didn’t even get nominated for Best Picture) and Natalie Portman gave one of the best performances of the last decade (Yes, I know Emma Stone won Best Actress).

Moana —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: More Disney female power. And The Rock… what more can you ask for?

Why Buy?

It’s Disney. It has a great soundtrack. Auli’l Cravalho has a great voice. The Rock is, well, The Rock. (Yes, I know he wants to be called Dwayne Johnson now but he’s always going to be The Rock to me.)

Rent It!

100 Streets –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: Three interwoven stories that play out over one square mile in London.

Why Rent?

Apparently, the reviews aren’t great but Idris Elba deserves unconditional support which is why this one falls under the rent category.

Stream It!

The Eyes of My Mother –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: One of those deeply disturbing looking horror flicks that will probably sit with you for a few months.

Why Stream?

If you’re on the fence with horror films like I am, you still might have to see it because of the reviews. One reviewer called it this generation’s Psycho which is some pretty huge praise. The reason it is on the Stream It! list rather than Rent It!? At 77 minutes, a few dissenting opinions referred to it as lengthy… that’s damning when a film is so short.

Trespass Against Us –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: Three generations of a family of outlaws with a tour de force of acting talent including Michael Fassbender.

Why Stream?

The compelling trailer looks intense and interesting. It’s shocking this film hasn’t made more waves which is a caution sign that movedĀ  it to the streaming side of the world.

Skip It!

Check Point –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: A sheriff and a vagrant fight back against a terrorist cell trying to take over America in a small North Carolina town. Oh boy!

Why Skip?

Let’s look at the cast: Bill Goldberg… Bill Freaking Goldberg? Come on, man! William Forsythe? When’s the last time William Forsythe did anything worthwhile? Tyler Mane. Meh. Fred Williamson. I like Fred Williamson but his middle name could be B. for all of the B movies he’s been in. Mindy Robinson looks to be the eye candy of the film but with her resume of reality shows, music videos and 2015’s All American Bikini Car Wash, can you expect much? Kane Hodder… that’s the guy who wore the mask in a lot of the Friday the 13th movies. That’s his big claim to fame. This one is a winner.

Incarnate –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: A scientific exorcism shouldn’t involve entering someone’s thoughts. Ugh.

Why Skip?

Science and demonic possession are mentioned in the same breath.

Man Down —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: Heavy handed flick about the toll of the military on a soldier after a combat tour.

Why Skip?

As easy as it would be to pin this one on Shia LaBeouf, I can’t. He’s not that bad in it. Jai Courtney, however, is pretty brutal in every movie he’s in. And what the heck happened to Gary Oldman. Gary, come back! Please! Stay away from this one.
