It’s another soft week for home video releases. The quantity of releases is pretty healthy with 9 releases. When you’re forced to make xXx: Return of Xander Cage one of your higher recommendations, you know you’re grasping at straws this week. Here is what to buy, rent, stream and skip for the week of May 16th:
Buy It!
Kennedys: After Camelot –NO REVIEW–
Super Simple Synopsis: Life for Jackie O. and the Kennedys after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
Why Buy?
It took something from the world of television to be the top recommendation this week. The two part miniseries aired on Reelz earlier this year and features Katie Holmes as Jacqueline Kennedy in a reprisal of her role in the 2011 miniseries The Kennedys.
Rent It!
xXx: Return of Xander Cage —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—
Super Simple Synopsis: The third installment in the xXx franchise featuring the return of Vin Diesel as Xander Cage after sitting out the sequel.
Why Rent?
There’s so much high adrenaline action in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, you won’t notice how thin the film is on plot. It’s a fun ride even if you find yourself saying, “Why the heck did I get on?” afterward.
Extortion –NO REVIEW–
Super Simple Synopsis: A family is stranded on a deserted island and found by a fisherman who demands a million dollars to rescue them. Separated from the island, the husband must find the fisherman to know where his family is.
Why Rent?
Of all the releases this week, Extortion has the most cohesive trailer and one of the most accomplished actors amongst its cast (Danny Glover) even if it is in a small, supporting role.
Stream It!
Breakdown Lane –NO REVIEW–
Super Simple Synopsis: One woman, a broken-down car, and the hungry undead.
Why Stream?
This looks awful. In the trailer, there’s a scene where the scantily clad main character is in her car and… is she masturbating? Don’t you have to know if this woman decides to masturbate in a car in the middle of a zombie apocalypse?
The Outcasts –NO REVIEW–
Super Simple Synopsis: It’s a less raunchy, more kid friendly, high school version of Revenge of the Nerds.
Why Stream?
The movie carries 6 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and 3 didn’t hate it. That’s something, right?
The Space Between Us —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—
Super Simple Synopsis: Boy born on Mars comes to Earth and seeks out his online crush… no, really.
Why Stream?
It’s not the worst movie of 2017 and Asa Butterfield is good even if the film is not.
Skip It!
Cabin Fear –NO REVIEW–
Super Simple Synopsis: An isolated wedding destination becomes the hunting ground for a killer.
Why Skip?
Another throwaway horror flick.
A Mermaid’s Tale –NO REVIEW–
Super Simple Synopsis: A 12-year-old befriends a teenage mermaid which could heal an ongoing feud between humans and sea people.
Why Skip?
Unless you’re curious how low Jerry O’Connell and Barry Bostwick will stoop for a paycheck, avoid this one at all costs.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—
Super Simple Synopsis: The sixth and (hopefully) final installment in the Resident Evil film series.
Why Skip?
If you’re really jonesing for some cinematic Resident Evil, pop in the game and watch the cut scenes.
… and Matthew Perry/Chandler Bing as Ted Kennedy.
