BuRStS #68: August 1st, 2017 featuring Sleight

An even dozen releases have made their way onto the home video market in the first week of August with Sleight leading the double 6-pack of films. Here’s what to buy, rent, stream and skip for the week of August 1st, 2017:

Buy It!

Sleight —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: A young street magician taking care of his sister gets in trouble with the wrong crowd.

Why Buy?

The magic trick here is that they snuck a superhero flick into a drama about an inner city street magician.

Rent It!

Colossal –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: An down on her luck woman realizes she is connected to a giant monster destroying Seoul, South Korea.

Why Rent?

Honestly, I think this would be in the “Buy It!” group if I saw it as I’ve heard and read nothing but great things about this Anne Hathaway flick.

Going In Style —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: Remake of the 1979 George Burns/Art Carney/Lee Strasberg film of the same name.

Why Rent?

This geezer caper features Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman… what more do you need?

Wakefield –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: A suburbanite vanishes by hiding in the attic in his garage and secretly observes the effect it has on his family.

Why Rent?

Bryan Cranston is a brilliant actor and this looks primed for a great performance.

Stream It!

The Circle —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: A young woman is caught up in her new position at a powerful tech and social media company.

Why Stream?

This box office bust featuring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks isn’t the worst movie of 2017 but it was disappointing considering the cache Watson and Hanks carry. It’s still worth a look if it were to pop on Netflix.

The Drowning –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: A psychologist plunges into an icy river to save a drowning man. He discovers it was the same person he testified against 12 years prior and helped convict for murder.

Why Stream?

This is one of those times where I’m thinking, “How the hell do they connect the dots here?” That’s enough to give it a look for me.

The Lovers –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: Two cheating spouses rekindle their old flame and now are cheating on their mistresses… with each other?

Why Stream?

It seems silly enough to work.

The Ottoman Lieutenant –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: The love story between an American nurse and Turkish officer during World War I.

Why Stream?

It was largely dismissed by critics but we already have 4 movies on the “Skip It!” list so think of The Ottoman Lieutenant making it to the “Stream It!” list as a survivor of the numbers game.

Skip It!

Cop and a Half: New Recruit –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: Basically, the skeleton of the plot of the original Cop and a Half but with different actors.

Why Skip?

I wish I could forget Cop and a Half and now you want me to suffer through a sequel? With Lou Diamond Phillips???

Don’t Knock Twice –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: This week’s recycled B horror movie topic is urban legends. This urban legend is about knocking on the door of an abandoned house.

Why Skip?

If you have to ask, I’m actually wishing you suffer through this awful looking horror schlock. Yes, I can be petty.

Phoenix Forgotten –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: We have a bonus B horror movie topic this week: The found footage flick!

Why Skip?

Footage of the final hours of three teens who disappeared in the Phoenix desert is discovered and you’ll wish it was never found.

S.W.A.T.: Under Siege –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: The S.W.A.T. compound is attacked by multiple assault teams after taking a mysterious prisoner into custody.

Why Skip?

It’s not a mash up of the SWAT reboot and the Steven Seagal classic featuring Erika Eleniak’s boobs.
