The Next Next 25 Movies of 2018, Graded

Last year, MHT saw Dunkirk on July 20th and it became the 75th movie seen in 2018. This year, Sorry to Bother You was the 75th movie seen on July 18th. While it wasn’t reviewed for a few days, it’s fair to say that the pace at which Movie Hot Take is slurping down movies in 2018 now matches 2017. Fortunately, this batch of 25 films saved the best for last and Sorry to Bother You now tops the list of movies in 2018. Last year, it was Baby Driver holding down the top spot at this point. If you want to catch up on all of MHT’s grades for this year, you can find them here:

  • The First 25 Movies of 2018, Graded (April 7, 2018)
  • The Next 25 Movies of 2018, Graded (June 3, 2018)

Now that you’re caught up, here’s the next next 25 movies of 2018 graded out:

The “Thumbs Up” Group

Sorry to Bother You 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5) REVIEW
Hereditary 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5) REVIEW

Hereditary scared every movie away from the top of this list until Sorry to Bother You came along. As a consolation prize, Hereditary will have to share a 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5) rating and take home the honor of costing me the most sleep.

The Endless 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) REVIEW
Won’t You Be My Neighbor? 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) REVIEW
First Reformed 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) REVIEW

Three small releases that hit 1,247 theaters… combined! Seeing this combination of films in theaters is rare enough it could be the combination to unlock hidden treasure. Or at least free popcorn.

Ocean’s 8 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) REVIEW
Uncle Drew 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) REVIEW
Whitney 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) REVIEW
Incredibles 2 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) REVIEW

If you told me I’d have Uncle Drew rated this high when watching the trailer, I would have called you crazy. Now I just think I might be crazy.

American Animals 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) REVIEW
Solo: A Star Wars Story 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) REVIEW
Adrift 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) REVIEW

It feels like long ago in a galaxy far, far away since Solo: A Star Wars Story hit theaters but it might have been film the 51st film seen this year.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) REVIEW
Upgrade 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) REVIEW
Tag 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) REVIEW
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) REVIEW

Two sequels bookend two of the more unique titles of this group of 25. Upgrade is gone from theaters and if you haven’t found Tag at theaters by now, you’re likely it forever.

The “Thumbs Eh” Group

Ant-Man and the Wasp 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5) REVIEW

“The okay-est sequel to the okay-est superhero movie ever” didn’t make any posters, did it?

The “Thumbs Down” Group

Skyscraper 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5) REVIEW
Hotel Artemis 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5) REVIEW

A cheap Die Hard knock-off and a distant John Wick descendant kick off the surprisingly small list of films that I don’t recommend seeing.

The First Purge 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5) REVIEW
Superfly 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5) REVIEW
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5) REVIEW

A prequel, a sequel and a reboot. There’s no shock this combo found it’s way together on the “Thumbs Down” side of things.

How It Ends 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5) REVIEW
Action Point 0.5 out of 5 stars (0.5 / 5) REVIEW

A Netflix Original and a sort of Jackass revival unsurprisingly are pulling up the rear of this list. They aren’t the bottom but they’re close enough. The two titles work out well for puns, though. I’m sure I’m not the only reviewer to want to write that alternate titles for these two films could be Who Cares How It Ends, Just End! and Action Pointless.

Gotti 0 out of 5 stars (0 / 5) REVIEW

Then there’s Gotti. The John Travolta travesty becomes the 5th movie of 2018 to receive the 0 out of 5 stars (0 / 5) rating.
