Trailer Hot Take: The Finest Hours (Trailer #2)

2015-11-13
By: Brian Joseph
On: November 13, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 35/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 45/100

Does anybody else believe if this movie were any good, we’d be seeing it before the ball drops? Another “incredibly true” story featuring Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and movie poison Eric Bana.

The Finest Hours has a very The Perfect Storm feel but 40 years prior and replace fishermen with the Coast Guard. However, the film is slated for January 29, 2016 and, as mentioned before, the January release is a kiss of death.

Trailer Hot Take: Alice Through the Looking Glass

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 60/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 75/100

The sequel to the live action version of Alice In Wonderland has a slightly different look and feel which might be due to the change in director with James Bobin stepping into the rather large and unusual shoes of Tim Burton. The trailer for Alice Through the Looking Glass must have been made by the same team who made the trailer for the live action version of The Jungle Book as there are considerable similarities.

Bobin was the writer and director of Da Ali G Show so it’s no surprise to see Sacha Baron Cohen to the cast. The movie tick tocks it’s way into theaters on May 27, 2016.

Trailer Hot Take: Touched With Fire

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 50/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 65/100

Call me crazy but there’s something intriguing about everything Katie Holmes does. Touched With Fire looks like a compelling view of mental illness. The score of the trailer adds to the intrigue as it feels like it does everything right. It wouldn’t be surprising to see this SXSW film festival favorite only make it to limited release on March 15, 2016 as the subject matter is primed for the art house.

Trailer Hot Take: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

On: November 12, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 10/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 50/100

I hate to admit it but the sequel to the 2002 smash hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding (surprisingly called My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2) looks solid. Nia Vardalos and John Corbett reunite with the entire cast to try and capture lightning in a bottle again. Usually, sequels pale in comparison to their predecessor but maybe this one will surprise.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 hit theaters March 25, 2016.

Trailer Hot Take: Miracles From Heaven

2015-11-12
By: Brian Joseph
On: November 12, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 25/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 25/100

You could say Miracles From Heaven looks touching, inspirational, mystifying and inspirational… or you could say it looks manipulative and contrived. If anything, it looks like we’re entering the golden age of faith-based movies (that’s a quantitative statement not qualitative).

The most confusing thing about this trailer is how much is revealed in it. It doesn’t feel like there’s much to see after watching the preview. Guess we’ll find out in March 2016.

Trailer Hot Take: Warcraft

2015-11-10
By: Brian Joseph
On: November 10, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 60/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 65/100

While I’m not a “World of Warcraft” player, I’m still mildly intrigued by Warcraft. I’ve never played WOW but I’ve watched it being played more than I’d like to admit. That being said, I’m glad to see there were more than one scenes featuring unnecessary flying. If Warcraft wants to be true to the game it is based on, the movie will be 26 hours long and the main characters flying will happen for 20 of those 26 hours. We’ll see next June.

Trailer Hot Take: Finding Dory

2015-11-10
By: Brian Joseph
On: November 10, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 80/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 85/100

It looks like all of the main characters will be back in the sequel to Finding Nemo. In Finding Dory, the Pixar cash grab sequel will center around Dory and her attempt to find her family. With Pixar’s track record, it’s hard to dismiss anything they do as it is rare they miss the mark. Coming June ’16.

Trailer Hot Take: 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi – Trailer #2

2015-11-04
By: Brian Joseph
On: November 4, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 35/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 35/100

At least Michael Bay has taken a break from destroying my childhood. It doesn’t feel like a stretch to venture to guess 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi will be a balls-to-the-wall action film with very little focus on plot development. Just a guess.

Trailer Hot Take: Race

2015-10-16
By: Brian Joseph
On: October 16, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 35/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 40/100

When a movie like Race, the story of Jesse Owens and the 1936 Berlin Olympics comes out, it’s obvious Oscar bait. When it comes out in February, it’s a “dump” movie. Movies with a topic of such substance released so far away from Oscar season are traditionally not good. There’s nothing about the trailer to suspect otherwise.

Trailer Hot Take: Ratchet & Clank

2015-10-16
By: Brian Joseph
On: October 16, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 35/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 50/100

13 years ago, Ratchet & Clank launched as a video game. Next year, it finally get the big screen treatment as a full length animated feature. The trailer looks silly and funny. Maybe Ratchet & Clank is timeless enough to make the leap to the big screen. Oh, and it’s an origin story! How delightful! Excuse me while you watch and I vomit (I haven’t vomited since 1996 so that’s sarcasm). The movie does deliver some heavyweight voices as Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Rosario Dawson and Sylvester Stallone are all listed amongst the voice actors. The film takes off April 29, 2016.
