It’s unlikely we’ll make it to 150 for 2018 any time soon but we made it back to 125 again at MHT. That’s a decent amount of films to see in a year, right? While there was only one 5 star film amongst the 25 (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), not one film of the last 25 scored less than “Thumbs Eh” which is a first since launching Movie Hot Take. Still a little backlogged on reviews, MHT tallied movie #100 about a week ago which continues to match 2017’s pace despite all the Movie Pass hiccups and other things that managed to get in the way of sitting in a dark theater for about 2 hours. While Sorry to Bother You remains in the top spot, 9 movies led by Juliet, Naked, jumped into the top 20 for the year. Last year, MHT saw Dunkirk on July 20th and it became the 75th movie seen in 2018. This year, Sorry to Bother You was the 75th movie seen on July 18th. While it wasn’t reviewed for a few days, it’s fair to say that the pace at which Movie Hot Take is slurping down movies in 2018 now matches 2017. Fortunately, this batch of 25 films saved the best for last and Sorry to Bother You now tops the list of movies in 2018. Last year, it was Baby Driver holding down the top spot at this point. Thanks to a soft January, a cruise to the Caribbean and some other uncontrollable circumstances, it took a little longer than last year to get to 25 movies. There’s a good chance the 2018 pace will catch up to 2017 by June and typically, the best movies don’t come until the second half of the year anyway. (At this point last year, Logan, John Wick: Chapter 2 and Kedi were the top 3 movies of 2017.) While the box office doesn’t reflect it, ignoring Black Panther, of course, 2018 is shaping up to be slightly better than 2017 although the bottom of 2018 is shaping up to be a cesspool. It took a little longer to close out 2017 than it did 2016 and while MHT only reached 151 movies in 2017 (compared to 181 in 2016), it was still a solid year of reviews. It took until the final 26 to get 2017’s top movie which controversially happens to be Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Actually, the top 3 films of MHT’s 2017 list all came from the final viewing period and 7 of the top 11. While 2017 started off with a fizzle, it definitely closed with a bang! On September 14th, mother! became the 100th movies seen and (eventually) reviewed by MHT with a release date in 2017. From a pace perspective, the site is 25 movies behind the previous year but there’s been plenty of days where we’ve been viewer-ready but the theaters haven’t cooperated with a movie to see. Baby Driver (seen in the last 25 movies graded) was joined by 4 5-star films released and seen in the time span it took to get from 75 to 100 with Wind River taking over the top spot on the Top Movies of 2017 list. In addition, mother!, It and A Ghost Story all received 5 stars. There were also 2 movies that couldn’t even muster up 1/2 a star with The Emoji Movie and Kidnap receiving 0 stars.
