To See or Not To See

To See Or Not To See – September 23rd: Storks, The Magnificent Seven, The Queen of Katwe & The Dressmaker

Last week was the worst week of the year at the box office. Thanks to disastrous performances by Blair Witch, Bridget Jones’s Baby and Snowden, the total box office was the lowest of any this year. This week, things are looking up as a star-studded remake and an animated feature look to boost the box office performance. Both releases will likely do more than the trio of duds from the previous week combined. There are also two platform releases joining the two heavyweights. Here are MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not see for the week of September 23rd:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – September 16th: Blair Witch, Bridget Jones’s Baby, Snowden, Hillsong – Let Hope Rise, Mr. Church, Wild Oats, Victor & Miss Stevens

This is one of those weeks at the movies where it feels more like quantity than quality. The week feels vaguely familiar as there’s a Blair Witch reboot, a Bridget Jones sequel, a controversial Oliver Stone project, a faith-based film and a role that might get Eddie Murphy nominated for an Oscar. There’s also 3 platform releases so if you try to see everything that comes out, it’s going to be a long week. Here’s MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not see for the week of September 16th:

To See Or Not To See – September 9th: Sully, The Wild Life, When the Bough Breaks, The Disappointments Room, Kicks & Dancer

The first official week of fall is upon us and the weekend cinema will now be competing with both college and professional football. A different type of airplane disaster film featuring Tom Hanks tackles the box office 2 days before 9/11 and is joined by kid’s fare, a drama targeting the African American audience, more low budget horror, an art house inner city flick and a documentary. It’s crowded, so let’s get right to what to see and not see for the week of September 9th:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – September 2nd: Morgan & The Light Between Oceans

It’s Labor Day weekend and it’s a light release week as just two new movies hit theaters and none reaching more than 2,500 theaters. This is typically the lowest grossing weekend of the summer and with only Morgan and The Light Between Oceans coming out, the weekend should live up to expectations. Here’s MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not see for the weekend of September 2nd:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – August 26th: Don’t Breathe, Mechanic: Resurrection, Southside With You, Hands of Stone, Greater, Level Up, The Hollars & The Sea of Trees

The summer is nearly over and to celebrate, the theaters are being loaded up with a bunch of films probably not good enough to do as well in the busier summer months. Don’t Breathe is expected to knock out Suicide Squad from the top spot while no other film is being projected to reach $10 million. Despite the smaller box office takes, there are 7 other films joining Don’t Breathe this week. That’s a lot so we better get right to MHT’s recommendations for what to see and not see for the week of August 26th:Read More →

With three new movies on 3,000+ screens this week, one could break out and take down Suicide Squad. Will the monumental upset happen? With Kubo and the Two Strings, War Dogs and Ben-Hur all vying for box office bucks and 2 platform releases, let’s take a look at what to see and not see for the week ending August 19th:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – August 5th: Suicide Squad & Nine Lives

How much will Suicide Squad shatter the August opening record by? Currently, the biggest August opening sits at $94.3 million. The record, held by 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, will probably fall by Saturday as Suicide Squad should pass $100 million in 2 days. The only other movie opening this week is a comedy that feels like a throwback to a different time period in filmmaking as a comatose Kevin Spacey gets trapped in a cat’s body. While there are currently no theater counts on the other 4 movies mentioned with an expected release date of August 5th, here is MHT’s recommendations on what to see or not see for August 5th:

Last week, the box office saw 5 movies rack up $20 million+. This week, two movies are expected to début at over $20 million and one from last week should hold as well. The expectation is for Jason Bourne to walk away with the box office crown but can Bad Moms knock off Star Trek Beyond for the second spot? Nerve actually hit theaters on Wednesday but could finish anywhere from 5th to 8th for the weekend. In addition, to the trio of wide releases, there are 5 platform releases that may or may not cast a wider net in the coming weeks (like Café Society and Captain Fantastic will be doing this week). Here are MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not see for the week of July 29th:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – July 22nd: Ice Age: Collision Course, Star Trek Beyond, Lights Out, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie & Beta Test

Last week’s reboot of Ghostbusters didn’t fail. It also wasn’t an overwhelming success as The Secret Life of Pets secured the top spot for the second straight week. This week, another animated sequel joins the sequel of a reboot, a horror film with a middling budget, a niche TV show headed to the big screen and some Sci-Fi action thriller no one has ever heard of. Here’s MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not to see for the weekend of July 22nd:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – July 15th: Ghostbusters, The Infiltrator, Café Society, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party & Equals

If you need to knock off a surprising animated juggernaut, who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters? It’s 2016 and we’re about to find out how far the movie watching public has come with a female twist on a popcorn classic. While it’ll be will they or won’t they take the top spot for Ghostbusters vs. The Secret Life of Pets, Bryan Cranston stars in The Infiltrator which actually released on Wednesday but might struggle to make the top 10 and three platform releases — two with controversy (think Woody Allen and Hillary Clinton) — round out the releases. Here’s MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not see in theaters for the week of July 8th:Read More →
