To See Or Not To See – July 8th: The Secret Life of Pets, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates & Captain Fantastic

Despite a surprising showing by The Legend of Tarzan, Finding Dory held on to the top spot at the box office for the third consecutive week. While Finding Dory will just keep swimming past Captain America: Civil War for the top spot at the box office in 2016, the tide will turn at the top of the charts as The Secret Life of Pets is all but guaranteed to début at #1. Also, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates and two platform releases round out this week’s releases. Here’s MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not see in theaters for the week of July 8th:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – July 1st: The Legend of Tarzan, The BFG, The Purge: Election Year & Our Kind of Traitor

Last week, Finding Dory kicked some serious butt as it took down Independence Day: Resurgence and friends (Dory beat all four new releases combined). This week, Finding Dory will own Independence Day weekend as four newcomers vie for second place. Will a Tarzan reboot topple a Purge sequel or will a Spielberg adaptation of a Roald Dahl classic be the BFD (big first début, of course!)? Here’s MHT’s recommendations of what to see and not see for the weekend of July 1st:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – June 24th: Independence Day: Resurgence, The Shallows, Free State of Jones, The Neon Demon, Swiss Army Man, Wiener-Dog

This week features two very summer movies paired with two very un-summer flicks as sequelitis continues to plague the summer box office. The four wide releases might not even add up to Finding Dory‘s second week haul and the two platform releases — including one about a flatulent corpse — won’t help. Here’s MHT’s recommendations of what to see and not see for the weekend of June 24th:Read More →

To See Or Not To See: June 17th – Finding Dory, Central Intelligence & Clown

Another week, another sequel. Pixar looks to dominate the box office with the follow up to Finding Nemo. There is nothing standing in it’s way but Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart will attempt to slow it down. They are joined by an Eli Roth produced platform release. Here are MHT’s recommendations for what to see and not see for the June 17th weekend:Read More →

To See Or Not To See: June 10th – Warcraft, The Conjuring 2, Now You See Me 2, Puerto Ricans in Paris, Genius, De Palma & The Music of Strangers

Sequelitis and video game movies continue to dominate 2016 as two more sequels and another video game movie find themselves in wide release. Four platform releases take up the rest of the slate with none likely to make it too far beyond their initial offering. Here’s MHT’s recommendations on what to see and what not to see:    Read More →

To See Or Not To See: June 3 – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Me Before You & Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Roughly half of the weeks this year have seen the box office crown worn by a sequel. With the arrival of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, the heroes in a halfshell are likely to continue the trend and even if a miracle happened and TMNT didn’t remain at the top, X-Men: Apocalypse would be likely to repeat. Also arriving is Me Before You and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Here’s MHT’s recommendations on what to see and not see this weekend:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – May 27th: X-Men: Apocalypse & Alice Through The Looking Glass

We’ll have a new #1 after Memorial Day weekend and it will be a sequel. Will it be the latest X-Men chapter or will Disney continue their ’16 dominance with an Alice In Wonderland sequel no one seems to be asking for? Here’s what MHT thinks you should see and not see for the weekend of May 27th:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – May 20th: The Angry Birds Movie, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, The Nice Guys, Welcome to Happiness, Maggie’s Plan, Weiner & The Other Side

Hollywood has banded together to take out Captain America: Civil War from the top spot at the box office. Does a movie based on a mobile phone app or a sequel to a surprise hit comedy have what it takes to do it? MHT thinks both The Angry Birds Movie and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising will do it but who will finish on top? Plus, The Nice Guys also gets a wide release and 4 other platform releases begin their theatrical journey. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t see on the weekend of May 20th:Read More →

To See Or Not To See – May 13th: Money Monster, The Darkness, Kill Zone 2, Search Party, Love & Friendship & The Lobster

Hollywood is very familiar with the tale of Daedalus and Icarus because they’re letting Captain America: Civil War have the box office in it’s second week. You don’t really think a movie where George Clooney plays a Jim Cramer-type can compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, do you? Even with Julia Roberts’ help, it won’t happen. Neither will the release of a horror film on Friday the 13th. The two “big” releases of the week are joined by four platform releases. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t see for the week of May 13th:Read More →

To See or Not to See – May 6th: Captain America: Civil War & A Bigger Splash

It’s summer season! Most likely the biggest movie of the summer is Captain America: Civil War because (a) it’s the biggest crossover film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date, (b) Marvel has a track record of monstrous comic book hits and (c) Disney has already bribed us all to give Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice great reviews so of course they’ve created a huge conspiracy to bump up the box office of Captain America: Civil War to win the summer. The moment has arrived! Oh and A Bigger Splash comes out, too. Here are the releases for the week of May 6th:Read More →
