Trailer Hot Take: The Good Dinosaur (Trailer #2)

2015-10-07
By: Brian Joseph
On: October 7, 2015
In: 2015, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 85/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 90/100

It’s Disney… and Pixar! Have they ever missed? The animation looks excellent. The story looks very Disney/Pixar. The Good Dinosaur will be huge!

Trailer Hot Take: Triple 9

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 50/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 75/100

After seeing the trailer for Triple 9, the only concern I have is the release date. Good movies don’t get released in February. Look at the cast here: Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Teresa Palmer (who possibly might be in every movie in February 2016). Something’s off when it comes to the release date. Think Focus with Will Smith.

There was a time Triple 9 was slated for a fall release but then it was moved to March (a slightly more promising month for movie releases) and then moved to February which isn’t as bad as January but still pretty bad unless it’s a Valentine’s Day release.

All things considered, Triple 9 still looks kick ass so I’ll start getting prepared for the disappointment now.

Trailer Hot Take: The Forest

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 20/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 40/100

The Forest warns “stay on the path.” For movie goers, staying on the path includes tempering any excitement for a January release.

So, even though The Forest is the feature-length directorial début of Jason Zada who launched a highly successful viral marketing campaign for OfficeMax (“Elf Yourself”) and the acting talents of Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) and Taylor Kinney (Zero Dark Thirty), don’t get your hopes up.

Also, for what it’s worth, horror trailers that have a habit of revealing too much often fall short. The Forest does boast a solid trailer, a “true” back story (Aokigahara Forest is a real place in Japan where people go to commit suicide) and the backing of a re-tooled Gramercy Pictures. Maybe, just maybe, The Forest can break the “dump month” mold.

Trailer Hot Take: Man Up

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 45/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 60/100

Lake Bell and Simon Pegg come across as having great chemistry in the blind date mix-up Man Up. The trailer was released 6 months ago but now that Man Up has a theatrical release date (November 13) in the U.S., the preview has resurfaced.

Bell looked capable of better in No Escape and Pegg always delivers a charismatic, highly watchable performance.

Trailer Hot Take: The Choice

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 50/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 50/100

The Choice is your standard Nicholas Sparks novel-to-movie Valentine’s Day date release. And the trailer does nothing to prove otherwise. Not that there’s anything wrong with it but it is what it is.

Trailer Hot Take: The Revenant

2015-09-29

On: September 29, 2015

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 75/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 100/100

Honestly, the previous teaser trailer was a little disappointing. But wow, if the new trailer for The Revenant doesn’t make up for it. There’s little doubt the predictions of this film being a Best Picture candidate are spot on. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy both shine in the just under 3 minute preview.

Very much looking forward to the release of The Revenant on December 25th. Christmas is very, very crowded this year!

Trailer Hot Take: Burnt

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 85/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 90/100

Having already seen the teaser trailer for Burnt, the excitement was already there: Bradley Cooper. That’s really all it takes… even with the abysmal failure that was Aloha. The new trailer for Burnt gives the movie a little depth and there’s even more reason to want to see it. Looks like October 23rd for the release date.

Trailer Hot Take: Truth

2015-09-24
By: Brian Joseph
On: September 24, 2015
In: 2015, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 55/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 60/100

Truth has a solid trailer. The film’s subject feels more fitting of an HBO film instead of a cinematic release but the cast says theater. Robert Redford as Dan Rather is somewhat difficult to swallow but we’ll see.

Trailer Hot Take: The Angry Birds

2015-09-23
By: Brian Joseph
On: September 23, 2015
In: 2016, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 40/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 48/100

The Angry Birds trailer does about as much for a movie about a mobile phone app as possible. There’s a number of funny actors lending their voice to this film. So, there’s that. Maybe it won’t be that pointless.

Personally, I’m more excited for Words With Friends: The Movie.

Trailer Hot Take: Meadowland

2015-09-22
By: Brian Joseph
On: September 22, 2015
In: 2015, Hot Take, Trailers

Anticipation (Before Trailer): 25/100

Anticipation (After Trailer): 55/100

Meadowland looks like it could be an under-the-radar hit. The cast is full of supporting players who add to any film they are in and Olivia Wilde has a full resume (although it’s not the most consistent one).

The movie itself about a couple dealing with unimaginable loss looks dark and has solid buzz with a limited October release expected.
