Thanks to a soft January, a cruise to the Caribbean and some other uncontrollable circumstances, it took a little longer than last year to get to 25 movies. There’s a good chance the 2018 pace will catch up to 2017 by June and typically, the best movies don’t come until the second half of the year anyway. (At this point last year, Logan, John Wick: Chapter 2 and Kedi were the top 3 movies of 2017.) It took 16 days longer to reach 25 movies in 2017 than in 2016. I’m blaming the flu. Per previous milestones, it’s now time to reveal the grades (from 0 to 5 stars) for the first batch of movies watched in 2017. Last year, there were 3 movies — Zootopia, The Witch and Deadpool — with 4 stars or more but only 1 — Logan — in 2017. Only 7 films received a Thumbs Up last year, though. In January, we took a stab at predicting the Oscar nominees and the results were good including predicting 100% of the Best Picture nominees for the second straight year! On a crazy Wednesday, I was invited on the War Machine vs War Horse Podcast to discuss A Hologram for the King. Because Wednesday was such a crazy day, I have to share more details as that was the day I endured Nina and plowed through Elvis & Nixon. (I also tried Pretzel Bites at the theater for the first time in years and they are no substitute for popcorn!) While seeing Nina, I was initially the only person in the theater but as the previews rolled, another person came in and sat directly next to me… the entire theater was empty other than us two (does that make it a date?). Then between Nina and Elvis & Nixon, I jumped on the podcast. I won’t even mention what I saw in the bathroom at Elvis & Nixon involving soiling and undergarments. Finally, on my way home, I ran over a piece of metal and flattened not one but two tires, had to wait 3 hours for a tow truck and had to Uber my way home (thanks, Giorgios!).

In light of all of the trials and tribulations, give the War Machine vs War Horse Podcast a listen as host Michael Dennison and I scratch the surface on A Hologram for the King before discussing two other films — 12 Angry Men and The Big Kahuna.

We’re 25 movies deep into 2016 reviewing all but 3 movies that have made it to 500 screens or more. Sorry Kung Fu Panda 3, Fifty Shades of Black and The Other Side of the Door (which is in the plans to see tonight).

Personally, I’ve never been a fan of ratings for movies. The old thumbs up/down system has always been my favorite. But then what do you do with those movies that fall in the middle?
