To See Or Not To See – May 13th: Money Monster, The Darkness, Kill Zone 2, Search Party, Love & Friendship & The Lobster

Hollywood is very familiar with the tale of Daedalus and Icarus because they’re letting Captain America: Civil War have the box office in it’s second week. You don’t really think a movie where George Clooney plays a Jim Cramer-type can compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, do you? Even with Julia Roberts’ help, it won’t happen. Neither will the release of a horror film on Friday the 13th. The two “big” releases of the week are joined by four platform releases. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t see for the week of May 13th:Read More →

Spoiler Alert: 10 Ways Captain America: Civil War & Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Are the Same & Who Does It Better

2016-05-09

The premier titles of the Marvel and DC Universes have hit theaters. Captain America: Civil War launched the summer movie season about a month and a half after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made it’s début. The two movies are eerily similar in many ways but one has to do it better than the other, right? (Warning: There are many spoilers throughout this post!)

Hot Take: Captain America: Civil War

Hot Take: Ambitious, smart and pure entertainment. You have to marvel at the organic way this many stories are weaved together. Amazing!

Step back for a minute and think about everything the Marvel Cinematic Universe was trying to accomplish with Captain America: Civil War. First and foremost, it applies the loose outline of the Civil War comic miniseries from ’06 and ’07 to the MCU but since secret identities do not exist in the MCU, a new angle must be introduced. Second, there are a number of existing characters from the Iron Man/Captain America/The Avengers films involved. Then the movie must pull in a character from another movie previously not tied in (Ant-Man) and introduce not one but two new characters (Spider-Man and Black Panther) with serious high stakes as both have stand-alone future films. This isn’t easy. If you think it is, see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.Read More →

To See or Not to See – May 6th: Captain America: Civil War & A Bigger Splash

2016-05-06

In: To See or Not To See

It’s summer season! Most likely the biggest movie of the summer is Captain America: Civil War because (a) it’s the biggest crossover film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date, (b) Marvel has a track record of monstrous comic book hits and (c) Disney has already bribed us all to give Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice great reviews so of course they’ve created a huge conspiracy to bump up the box office of Captain America: Civil War to win the summer. The moment has arrived! Oh and A Bigger Splash comes out, too. Here are the releases for the week of May 6th:Read More →

Hot Take: Papa: Hemingway In Cuba

Hot Take: According to Papa, Hemingway was an asshole when he drank. He was boring, too.

The most the film about the later years of the life of Ernest Hemingway has to offer is a cinematic look at Cuba. Papa: Hemingway in Cuba was the first U.S. film to be made in Cuba since 1959. The visuals of the island are beautiful and stand out as the dull story of the decline of the literary giant as he offers an olive branch to a writer who sends him a fan letter. Read More →

Hot Take: Mother’s Day

Hot Take: Do you hate your mother? Take her to see Mother’s Day. The worst movie of 2016 so far. Maybe the worst movie ever.

As I watched Mother’s Day, the stark realization came over me that time travel does not exist, at least not anything affordable to the masses. If it did, the future version of myself would have stopped me from suffering through this ill-conceived dumpster fire of a film that isn’t even relieving when the credits roll. The film opens and closes with a brutal Meghan Trainor song (called “Mom”) that is actually worse than Trainor’s “Dear Future Husband” which, if you’ve heard “Dear Future Husband” is stupefying. Another six-pack of releases hit the DVD shelves and this week’s batch is less appealing than last week’s choices. The options include the latest Jennifer Lawrence/David O. Russell collaboration, the most recent Nicholas Sparks conversion, yet another YA dystopian tale and three films that received no box office love. Keep reading as MHT gives recommendations on what to buy, rent, stream or skip for the week of May 3rd:Read More →
