BuRStS #60: May 30, 2017 featuring Before I Fall

There are some weeks where the “Buy It!” recommendation is legit. There are others where it’s the best of a bad lot. That’s how this week’s “Buy It!” recommendation came about with Before I Fall leading the way amongst the muck and grime of this week’s releases. Here’s what buy, rent, stream and skip for the week of May 30th:

Buy It!

Before I Fall –MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: Groundhog Day: High School Edition.

Why Buy?

Zooey Deutch stars as a popular high school girl forced to relive the same day over and over again until she gets it right. This comes across as a breakout performance for Deutch whose performance is the best thing about the film.

Rent It!

The Blackcoat’s Daughter –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: Two girls stranded at an all-girls prep school deal with an unseen force while another woman makes a pilgrimage to the location.

Why Rent?

It sounds unusual and scary, features Emma Roberts and Lauren Holly in supporting roles and is an A24 production.

Stream It!

Fist Fight —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: Three O’Clock High: Teacher Edition.

Why Stream?

Even though the film is pretty much a miss, you might get a laugh or two from Charlie Day or Ice Cube. Worst case scenario, there’s Tracy Morgan in a supporting role who should get that laugh out of you.

The Shack –NO REVIEW–

Super Simple Synopsis: The spiritual journey of a man who lost his daughter.

Why Stream?

There’s an excellent cast featuring Sam Worthington, Octavia Spencer, Graham Greene, Radha Mitchell and Tim McGraw.

Skip It!

Collide —MOVIE HOT TAKE REVIEW—

Super Simple Synopsis: A car chase disguised as a love story.

Why Skip?

As guilty of a pleasure it should be with Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley in over-the-top roles and two highly likable actors — Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones — in important roles (Hoult is the star and Jones plays his girlfriend in a supporting role), it somehow isn’t. Actually, it’s pretty terrible.
