From It to Friend Request, September’s Anticipated Theatrical Releases, Ranked

2017-08-31
By: Brian Joseph
On: August 31, 2017
In: 2017, Ranked, Trailers

September is a snapshot of the movie industry in 2017. There’s not a lot to get excited about and even those that are worth anticipating have some baggage. Whether it be It which looks awfully scary BUT we’ll be comparing it to the two-part TV movie from 1990 or American Made starring Tom Cruise who is fresh off one of the worst movies of 2017 in The Mummy or Mother! which features Jennifer Lawrence and is directed by Darren Aronofsky but neither showed up well in their last effort (Passengers for Lawrence and Noah for Aronofsky) or a handful of smaller films that might catch lightning in a bottle (Battle of the Sexes, Rebel In the Rye, Woodshock, Lucky, Stronger) but are conspicuous by their absence of a wider release in a soft month. There’s a big sequel — Kingsman: The Golden Circle — which has had such a quiet release that has to make you wonder. There’s a remake — Flatliners — which looks to have too many bells and whistles and is likely to lose some of the original’s appeal. There’s Tulip Fever… again! Seriously, how many times am I going to put Tulip Fever on my anticipated releases list? I’m starting to feel like Charlie Brown and I think Tulip Fever is Lucy.Enough about how sketchy the September release slate is. Here’s all 35 expected releases ranked in order of anticipation:Read More →

The summer season is winding down and August typically isn’t the best month for movies. That being said, there are a handful of films — led by Logan Lucky and The Hitman’s Bodyguard — we’re looking forward to with plenty of films we’ll probably see even though there isn’t much desire to actually do so. Here’s the August release calendar and their trailers, ranked in order of anticipation:Read More →

The Next Next 25 Movies of 2017, Graded

2017-07-22

On July 20th, Dunkirk became the 75th movie seen and reviewed by MHT released in 2017. While we’re well behind the impressive pace of 2016, the shorter theatrical windows and clear outs for tentpole releases has really hindered viewing some of the deeper cuts this year. Plus, MHT decided to sit out some of the sequels like Smurfs: The Lost Village, Cars 3 and Underworld: Blood Wars. There was finally a 5 star film in the last group of 25 — Baby Driver — and it has a firm grip on the #1 film of 2017 so far. Please check out the previous postings here:

At the halfway point of the 2017 movie season, it’s a good time to check in and see which movies were on the top of their game this year. It’s unlikely we’ll be talking about any of them come Award season but there was plenty of cinematic success to recognize. Here’s the best films and performances according to Movie Hot Take for the first half of 2017:Read More →

From Atomic Blonde to Scales: Mermaids Are Real, July’s Anticipated Theatrical Releases, Ranked

The height of summer movie season is usually July. Though this July does not look like one of the strongest in recent history, the box office is guaranteed to light up for Spider-Man: Homecoming and expectations are high for Dunkirk and MHT’s most anticipated release of the month, Atomic Blonde. While Spider-Man: Homecoming checks the re-boot (and superhero) box for the month, War for the Planet of the Apes, Girls Trip and An Inconvenient Sequel check the sequel box, Wish Upon fills the horror quota and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, well, I don’t know what that one does but it’s coming out, too. Here’s the full list of theatrical releases for July accompanied by their theatrical trailer:Read More →

The June box office will likely cash in on Wonder Woman, Transformers: The Last Knight and Despicable Me 3 but it is Baby Driver that has MHT excited. There’s a total of 32 movies due to come out in some capacity in June and here are the trailers for all of them as well as what MHT is most (and least) excited for:Read More →

There are some huge movies on the slate to kick off the 2017 summer movie season. There are big box office expectations for 3 sequels (Guardians of the Galaxy,Vol. 2, Alien: Covenant and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) and Amy Schumer returns to the cinema to see if she can repeat the kind of success she had with Trainwreck in Snatched. All in all, there are 9 movies expected to see a wide release and 25 movies on the release schedule. Here’s the full list of films coming out in May:Read More →

The 8 Star Wars Episodes Trailers, Ranked

This week, the trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was dropped on us. The official trailer on the Star Wars YouTube page has already surpassed 29 million views so there’s a pretty good chance you’ve seen it unless you’re under a rock (or my brother who still doesn’t get Star Wars). So, rather than just post the trailer and hope to piggyback a few clicks, I thought it would be more interesting to go back and watch all (okay, not all because the films have had multiple trailers) of the trailers from the first 7 movies along with the new one and rank them. Here’s how the trailers rank from worst (The Phantom Menace) to first (Now, you have to read further because I’m not just giving the whole list away!):Read More →

Looking through the lineup of theatrical releases in April, I miss March and can’t wait until May. Of the 28 potential releases, only 4 are worth going out your way for with The Fate of the Furious (likely to be April’s biggest box office earner) coming in at #5. Here’s the list of films coming out in April:Read More →
