The First 25 Movies of 2017, Graded

2017-03-25

On: March 25, 2017
In: 2017, Ranked, Weigh In

It took 16 days longer to reach 25 movies in 2017 than in 2016. I’m blaming the flu. Per previous milestones, it’s now time to reveal the grades (from 0 to 5 stars) for the first batch of movies watched in 2017. Last year, there were 3 movies — Zootopia, The Witch and Deadpool — with 4 stars or more but only 1 — Logan — in 2017. Only 7 films received a Thumbs Up last year, though. This year 10 movies graded out to a Thumbs Up and none (not even Rings) received 0 stars. Here are the first batch of grades of 2017:Read More →

From Beauty and the Beast to The Baby Boss, March’s Anticipated Theatrical Releases, Ranked

2017-02-28
By: Brian Joseph
On: February 28, 2017
In: 2017, Ranked, Trailers

The month of March might be the best month for movies in 2017. There are 15 movies — led by Beauty and the Beast, Logan and Kong: Skull Island — that are on the definitely want to see list and another 4 that are on the maybe list. The bottom of the list includes some duds that for some reason — Power Rangers (Nostalgia), The Shack (Octavia Spencer), The Baby Boss (Alec Baldwin) — still feel novel enough to be seen. So, here’s the list of movies headed to theaters in March, ranked by anticipation:Read More →

From John Wick: Chapter 2 to Stray Bullets, February’s Anticipated Theatrical Releases, Ranked

The only good thing about February’s theatrical releases? It isn’t January. If you’ve been here before at the beginning of the month, you know the deal. MHT ranks the upcoming releases based on what we’re looking forward and provides links to the trailers for you to check out. It’s no different this month as Keanu Reeves is back as John Wick and is joined by 3 other sequels and a handful of other movies that couldn’t find a better release date. Without further ado, here’s the list of expected theatrical releases for February, ranked by anticipation:Read More →

From The Founder to Monster Trucks, January’s Anticipated Theatrical Releases, Ranked

Welcome to “dump” month everyone! January is notorious for two things: Award nominees getting wide releases after getting thrown into a theater or two in New York or Los Angeles and garbage movies that get dropped into January because, well, it’s the best month to release terrible movies since the audiences are much smaller. Sometimes this carries over to February. It also usually encompasses the last two weeks of August and first two weeks of September but let’s get back to January. There are only a few releases that didn’t make the December list (if it was the former of the two things January is notorious for) but the rest were meant for January which means Hollywood didn’t like them all that much. That usually means we won’t either. Let’s take a look at the list:Read More →

Last month, MHT sat out ranking the anticipated releases due to some unforeseen circumstances. December is a big month and it’s headlined by the first Star Wars spin-off: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. There are plenty of other solid options in December and a few that should get Oscar buzz. From The Accountant to Boo! A Madea Halloween, October’s Anticipated Theatrical Releases, Ranked

Thanks to a trip to Vegas, the Movie Hot Take normal schedule was thrown for a loop. It’s October now and we typically kick off every month with a list of trailers for all of the releases coming out for the month. While the first week of October is already in the books, we’ll pretend like that didn’t happen yet and run down the list of 25 anticipated releases for October. Here’s the list of October releases ranked in order of anticipation:

1. The Accountant (October 14)

We haven’t seen Ben Affleck since Batffleck and the positive reviews of his performance in an otherwise panned Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice should help The Accountant at the box office. The movie actually looks pretty good and there’s a decent supporting cast (Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jeffrey Tambor, John Lithgow).
